Wait when you say scrapped to you mean Scrapped like in the Scrap metal type sense or scrapped as in for spare parts.

My understanding is that its going to scrap metal, not scrap parts. This will not benefit salvage parts places.

Thats what I was thinking.

I bet that there are already folks scheming on how to resale them tho. I bet Cuba would love to have some of them.

What happens to the vehicle I trade in?

The CARS Act requires that the trade-in vehicle be crushed or shredded so that it will not be resold for use in the United States or elsewhere as an automobile. The entity crushing or shredding the vehicles in this manner will be allowed to sell some parts of the vehicle prior to crushing or shredding it, but these parts cannot include the engine or the drive train.

I say some parts will be easier to get hold of because a lot of these trade-ins would still be sitting in someone's yard or driveway if it wasn't for this program, and they can't be complete junk - they have to be driveable. From what I'm reading a good deal of folks are trading in cars they were using and originally wouldn't have traded them in if it wasn't for the program.

Well the things is most scrap places dont deal in spare parts. They get em in and get em and get em out.

All they can keep off of the cars are the tires (recyclable not to resell), cat converter (same), radiator (same), and condensor (same).

As Stripes said the car business runs off of trade-ins not new sales. A new car dealer makes very little if anything off of new car sales and their money is made off of the trade-ins they resell. So this really isn't helping them all that much financially, all they are really doing is moving inventory and getting it off of the floorplan. This program is more like Freddie and Fannie and your gonna have all these people trading and getting these new cars along with the nice new payment book that comes with it that they can't afford.

The only thing that can't be resold is engine parts, but the engine is useless anyways - it's coated with liquid glass. A recycling lot can take possession of the car, it has 180 days to sell the pieces of the car that retain some value. Even though the engine's a lost cause, everything from the scrap metal to the hubcaps is available to buy. It's pretty much nothing like Fannie and Freddie, I don't think anyone is trading in for a Lambos...and if a car payment isn't the same as a house payment.

Just because the number aren't in the 100's of thousands like a house doesn't change that you have people going and trading up getting this great deal and they won't be able to afford the payments. This is just another welfare program to get more people accustomed to big brother taking care of everything. More of their idiotic spend and go further in debt to get out of debt logic.

Small cars top sellers list under Cash for Clunkers - Aug. 4, 2009

That's the top ten sellers in the program, doesn't look like they'll have that much of a problem. $225-325 payment is much different than couple grand for a house payment every month, and easier to get rid of. That took years to boil over too, this is a 2 month program.

You may want to do a little more research, the average house payment is $700/month not $2000.
